Lisianthus, Eustoma grandiflorum commonly called prairie gentian, bluebell gentian are valued for many reasons including their resemblance to roses, their long vase life as cut flowers and their unique beauty. They come in many colors, romantic soft tones, and mysterious bicolour flowers. In addition to their colours and shape, they are sought after by florists for their strong stems, lush succulent leaves, and graceful buds that continue to open in a vase for several weeks. They are hardy in USDA hardiness zones 8-10. Lisianthus is not that much hard to grow, and starting them from seeds may be your best option if you want to have these gorgeous flowers. As you know that some companies pack lisianthus seeds in pelleted form and some in non pelleted form. Lisianthus seeds are very minute, and they are very difficult to sow them in seedling trays evenly, so to avoid such hurdle, companies pack lisianthus seeds in pelleted form. So, don’t panic, Dr. Green got great success in propagating lisiathus plants from both pelleted and non pelleted seeds. How to germinate lisianthus seeds ? Seeds starting mix: The most important requirement to get good success in germinating lisianthus seeds is the soil mix. Don’t start lisianthus seeds in garden soil. Instead, choose a sterile seed starting mix that has either cocopeat or peatmoss. Since lisianthus seeds are so tiny, you need a medium that is as fine as possible to allow for better contact with the seeds. Seeds' starting mix for lisianthus must be well draining, fertile and slightly acidic. Dr. Green has used his own soil mix and has tremendous results. First Dr. Green made a mixture of cocopeat, pumice, perlite, and wormcastings / vermicompost. And then another mix of cocopeat plus vermiculite as a top layer so that lisianthus seeds can germinate in this sterile layer. This top layer of cocopeat and vermiculte will have good contact with lisianthus seeds as well. Temperature : Start lisianthus seeds when temperature drops down to 25℃. Sowing method: Lisianthus seeds can be challenging to germinate, so make sure the seeds are fresh. Buy seeds from well reputable companies in pelleted form for easy handling. Put lisianthus seeds over the surface of seeds starting mix. You don’t have to cover the seeds, as lisianthus seeds need light to germinate.
