Before humans became Earth’s apex predators, our ancestors were prey.
For more than 2.5 million years, early humans faced crowned eagles, giant crocodiles, leopards, giant hyenas, cave lions, Komodo dragons, and enormous Ice Age predators. This video follows that timeline—from Australopithecus in South Africa and Homo habilis at Olduvai Gorge to Neanderthals, Homo floresiensis, and the first people in the Americas.
We’ll examine the Taung Child’s skull marks, crocodile attacks at Olduvai, how fire changed the balance between humans and predators, the possible 900,000-year population bottleneck, Peking Man and the giant short-faced hyena, Neanderthal hunting injuries, the Toba supereruption, the disappearance of Ice Age megafauna, Nataruk’s evidence of early group violence, and the rise of infectious disease after farming.
Some interpretations remain debated, including the severity of the ancient population bottleneck and whether Toba nearly pushed humanity to extinction.
What do you think was the most dangerous threat our ancestors ever faced? Let me know in the comments.
