This piece was inspired by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa’s short story The Spider’s Thread. Kandata, who committed many evil deeds during his lifetime, has fallen into Hell. The Buddha remembers his one good deed—sparing the life of a spider—and lowers a single spider’s thread from Paradise into Hell. Kandata begins climbing the thread in an attempt to escape. But when he sees countless sinners climbing after him, he cries out, “This thread is mine!” At that very moment, the thread snaps, and he falls back into the depths of Hell. The salvation and hope extended to him are lost through his selfish desire to be saved alone. Through music, I have expressed the light and darkness, salvation and selfish attachment, ascent and rupture portrayed in this story.
