I Wasn’t Looking for Islam—Something Kept Pulling Me Toward It | Journey to Islam Stories

Nalia was raised in a deeply Catholic environment in Poland, attending Catholic schools, studying the Bible, going to confession, and even taking part in pilgrimages. For much of her childhood, she barely knew that other religions existed. But as she entered her teenage years, everything began to change. She started questioning her faith, became lost in life, got into trouble, and went down a dark path. Her first real encounter with a Muslim was an Afghan refugee who came to her Catholic school, giving her an unexpectedly positive impression of Islam. Years later, her best friend reverted to Islam, sparking a curiosity that would eventually lead Nalia to explore Islam for herself. She even explored Russian Orthodoxy before realizing that many of the things she appreciated were closely connected to Islam. After a particularly difficult and traumatic night, Nalia woke up one morning and told her friend, “I’m taking my Shahada.” She simply looked up the Shahada, asked her friend to witness it, put a scarf around her head, and began a completely new chapter of her life. Her reversion came with challenges. She lost friendships, stopped participating in the drinking and clubbing culture around university, and experienced judgment and a lack of understanding within parts of the Muslim community. As a neurodivergent Muslim, she found that some people misunderstood her struggles and treated them as matters of character rather than recognizing the difficulties she experienced. Instead of giving up, Nalia built her own community. What began as a small WhatsApp group called “Veils and Vibes” grew into a worldwide community of Muslim sisters, bringing together both converts and born Muslims. Today, Nalia says that Islam completely transformed her life. She became more confident, disciplined, empathetic, peaceful, and involved in helping others.
