Asteroid Base Defense is a new arcade game for the Commodore 64, written in assembly: asteroids are falling on your three cities; shoot them down, and spend what you earn to keep the cities standing. This is version 1.2: the ship leans as it flies left and right, the ships and the cities are redrawn, and there's a new meteor and a redrawn nuke. Two games in this video. The first is played straight from the title page with the cash it earns: wave 1, arming the three cities with homing missiles, the first boss, then wave 2, where the ship holds its fire until the Dome takes a hit, and a repair puts it right. A nuke clears the sky. The second boss gets through and wrecks Command on the spot. In wave 3 the ship stops firing altogether, to show how a game ends: the last city falls in wave 4, and 63,500 points go into the top 10 with three initials, entered with the joystick and saved to the disk. The second game skips ahead: it starts at wave 5 with 14,000 in cash set, for the three ship upgrades (twin wing guns, triple guns, a homing missile of its own), another repair and three nukes, the wave 5 boss, and then on to wave 9, where the meteors are, and its boss. On the disk: the whole game in assembly, a pixel-art title page, three original SID tunes, twenty sound effects, and a top 10 saved to the disk. PAL and NTSC, joystick in port 2. Some stretches are cut for length. Recorded on an NTSC Commodore 64 in the VICE emulator, with the game's own SID music and sound. Played by a script holding the joystick, with the real keys for the shop.
