Giselle: Short Libretto Act I: The Village Giselle, a delicate peasant girl with a weak heart, falls in love with Albrecht, a nobleman disguised as a villager named "Loys." Despite the warnings of Hilarion (a local gamekeeper who also loves her), Giselle trusts Albrecht. During a harvest festival, the truth is revealed: Albrecht is already betrothed to a Princess. Devastated by his betrayal, Giselle loses her mind in a harrowing "Mad Scene" and dies of a broken heart. Act II: The Wilis At night, in a moonlit forest, Giselle's spirit rises to join the Wilis—ghosts of brides who died before their wedding day. Led by their vengeful queen, Myrtha, the Wilis trap men and force them to dance until they die of exhaustion. They kill Hilarion and turn their sights on a grieving Albrecht. However, Giselle’s love is so powerful that she dances with him, protecting him and sustaining his strength until the sun rises. The Wilis lose their power at dawn; Albrecht is saved, and Giselle returns to her grave, now at peace.
