Falls Road District - Belfast

The Falls Road district is the most important center of the Republican community in the city. A predominantly working-class community, the Falls Road district has always had a strong socialist tradition and before the 1970s it was an area of ​​less nationalist presence than other areas in Northern Ireland. Between 3 and 5 July 1970 Falls Road was the focus of a violent battle between British soldiers and the IRA. Four Catholic civilians were killed. This episode appears to have led many Irish / Catholic Nationalists to take sides against the British Army and created enormous support for the IRA. For the next three decades, the British Army maintained a constant presence on Falls Road with a base on the top floors of the Divis Tower. Post removed only in August 2005 following the peace accords.
