In 1979, Shenzhen was a fishing town of about 30,000 people. Today it's a city of 17.8 million — and China makes almost 30% of everything manufactured on Earth, more than the US, Japan and Germany combined.
The usual explanation is cheap labour. But plenty of countries had cheap labour. Only one became the factory of the world. So what actually happened?
In this visual explainer we follow the story from a secret contract signed by 18 farmers in 1978, through Deng Xiaoping's Special Economic Zones, the largest migration in human history, China's entry into the WTO, a building spree of roads, ports and power plants, and the supply-chain clusters that make China so hard to replace — all the way to EVs, solar, robots, "China + 1" and India's push to catch up.
