St Dunstan’s Church, Snargate: The 500-Year-Old Ship on the Wall

St Dunstan’s Church in Snargate, Kent, is a fascinating medieval church with a very unusual secret — a huge ship painted onto the wall around 1500. In this video, I explore this quiet church on Romney Marsh and take a look at its history, architecture and some of the fascinating features that have survived here for hundreds of years. Inside, there’s a medieval font dating from around 1220, medieval floor tiles, an impressive fifteenth-century tower, historic roof timbers, medieval architectural details and, of course, the remarkable Great Ship wall painting on the north wall. The ship is thought to date from around 1500 and is one of the most unusual things I’ve come across in an English church. There is also a long-standing local tradition connecting ship paintings in Romney Marsh churches with smuggling — and St Dunstan’s has its own documented smuggling story, including the discovery of tobacco hidden in the church in the eighteenth century. St Dunstan’s is a Grade II listed medieval church* and is a wonderful example of the layers of history you can find in the quieter churches of Kent and Romney Marsh.
