Original Song: "一年の詩 / Hitotose no Uta" (A Year's Poem)~ for Wind Ensemble Hibike Euphonium Season 3 Kitauji Free Choice Piece Music by Akito Matsuda    • 一年の詩 ~吹奏楽のための (全国大会金賞 Ver.)   Piano Arrangement by Justin Wai Footage from "Sound! Euphonium 3" and "Sound! Euphonium The Final Movie Part 1" -------------- Sound Euphonium has officially come to end its ultimate conclusion, with the release of the final recap movie in part 2. I've talked extensively about this anime's impact on me in my previous video (where I attempt to video essay), so please watch that if you haven't already. After making that video and listening to the soundtrack a LOT, I realized I really wanted to pay tribute to the free choice piece featured in this final season, "Hitotose no Uta," a true representation of Kumiko's grand high school journey. It didn't really seem like many people have attempted arranging the piece for solo piano, let alone perform it, so I pulled up the 'official' band score and decided to give it a try. It was quite a challenge for me actually and required working that 'classical music' part of my brain that I hadn't really exercised in a while. Unlike my typical pop song improvisation style, I wanted to get the details and intricacies of this piece sounding 'correct,' which proved to be very difficult given the amount of depth and polyphony in the original concert band arrangement. It was a long process to decide what to keep and what to cut, how to re-arrange the parts to fit on the piano, and then practicing it with the desired tone and character. I always kept the idea of imitating the original wind ensemble sound in mind. The result is an arrangement that I am most proud of, and I hope it brings fellow Sound Euphonium fans that might be piano players the same joy as well. I hope it's relatively playable, but I must apologize once again for my abuse of large intervals thanks to my big hands. My favourite part of the arrangement no doubt has to be the climax of the final movement at 5:15, and I'm very pleased at how 'pianistic' i managed to make that part, making it actually very satisfying to play. It was the very first part of the arrangement I notated down in full since I became obsessed with how euphoric the build felt when listening the soundtrack lately, and once I had that figured out I was like 'welp' guess i gotta commit to finishing the entire thing now. Thank you KyoAni for seeing Kumiko's journey to the very end, and thank you for watching this video! This school term has shaping up to be very stressful and busy for me so expect uploads to remain slow, but when I find the time I will always continue to share the music that I am most passionate about.
