A taqsim is a type of improvisation used when playing Arabic music. It conveys in a beautiful way the musical universe of a given Maqam. There are short concentarted taqsim performances, as well as other that can last several minutes. A taqsim is quite a meditative and spiritual musical experience for the player, and also for the listener. If one is able to let go of thoughts, worries, mental noise, and other distractions, a reward awaits in the form of a very special lift of energy. It is difficult to describe in words. Among other things, Iit is a cleansing experience. This particular Tasqim is dedicated to my good friend and Egyptian master player Ayman Asfour. I did learn this taqsim from him. Mr. Asfour was one of the many gifted arabic musicians I met while living in Alexandria, Egypt.
