What Happened to Herman III:
On April 25, 2022, Herman Whitfield III was having a mental health crisis, but he was not violent or threatening anyone. His mother called 911 to request medical assistance for him. Instead, six Indianapolis Metro Police Dept officers showed up, electrocuted Herman with a taser twice, and suffocated Herman III in his family's living room. After brutally killing Herman, the officers searched the Whitfield's home without a warrant, bruised his mother's arm when she objected to the illegal search, refused to allow his parents to go to the hospital to see Herman, and chased their car after they managed to escape to see Herman at the hospital. IMPD initially released heavily edited and voice-over narrated compilation of the body cam footage. After going to court, the Whitfield's attorneys, Richard Waples and Israel Nunez Cruz, released the full body cam footage in January 2023 (footage can be viewed at www.justice4herman3rd.org).
Current Status: Almost a year after his murder, on 4/13/2023, an Indianapolis grand jury indicted two officers (Steven Sanchez and Adam Ahmad) of the six officers who killed Herman and criminal proceedings are tentatively scheduled for July 2023. However, these two officers (and all six officers) are still employed with the Indianapolis police. Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett, the IMPD Chief Randall Taylor, the Merit Board, and the City-County Council have ignored calls for the termination of the officers and a U.S. Dept of Justice federal investigation into Herman's death. The Indianapolis press/news outlets in Indianapolis were invited to cover In Harmony for Justice, but would not cover this event on 4/22/2023.
