Police are seizing e-bikes worldwide. Learn the US, UK and EU rules and use a 6-point checklist to find out if your e-bike is legal.
The same e-bike can be legal in America and illegal on roads in the United Kingdom and the European Union. In this video we look at why police are stepping up e-bike enforcement, what separates a bicycle with a helping motor from a motor vehicle, and which changes can make a legal bike illegal.
Enforcement figures from New York City and London
The US federal low-speed e-bike definition and the Class 1, 2 and 3 system
UK and EU rules: 250 watts and the assisted speed limit
Modifications that create legal risk: speed unlocks, power upgrades, throttles, removed pedals and imports
What can happen if police stop you
A 6-point checklist you can use anywhere
THE 6-POINT CHECKLIST
1. Do the pedals work, and can they propel the bike?
2. Does it have a throttle, and is that allowed where you ride?
3. What is the motor's rated power?
4. What is the top assisted speed?
5. Is there proper certification and a clear label?
6. What do your local rules say about where you can ride, age limits, helmets, licences and insurance?
IMPORTANT
E-bike laws differ by country, state and city, and they change over time. This video explains the common framework and is not legal advice. Check your local transport authority or police website for the rules where you live and ride.
