The Little Bookshelf: A Gentle Beginning to Reading 🌿📚 Today I’m taking you inside The Little Bookshelf and showing you how it actually works, but I’m also sharing something a little more special: examples from when my own children were younger and we were living many of these ideas in our homeschool. This curriculum didn’t begin as a collection of activities I thought might work. So much of it grew from the way we actually learned together: reading beautiful books, noticing things when we were out, drawing, cooking, making, exploring outside and allowing ordinary life to become part of our homeschool. As my children grew, I wanted to take that gentle way of learning and pair it with something I think is incredibly important when a child is learning to read: a clear, systematic pathway. So The Little Bookshelf has two parts working alongside one another. The alphabet gives us beautiful themes to explore through books and real life, while underneath it is a carefully sequenced reading pathway teaching sounds, blending, phonemic awareness, early spelling and writing, and eventually words, sentences and little pieces of connected text. The two don’t have to move at exactly the same pace. The bookshelf can wander. Reading builds step by step. There are 26 flexible A to Z sections, but it isn’t a 26 week race. Stay longer. Repeat a reading lesson. Follow an unexpected interest. Use the books you already own. Go outside. Let your child notice something you never planned. You don’t need a huge collection of curriculum or a particular set of books. The letter gives you a doorway. The bookshelf gives you the story. Real life gives you the curriculum.
