For about three and a half years, humanity had something it had never had before and has not had since: a complete, same-instant view of the entire Sun. Two spacecraft, drifting slowly apart, passed through the one configuration that showed us the whole star at once — and then one of them stopped answering. This is the story of what we could see, what we lost, and how solar physicists map an entire hemisphere they cannot photograph by listening to the sound it makes. In this video: • Why a complete map of the Sun has never been a snapshot • How two spacecraft on a 22-degree-a-year drift gave us the whole star in February 2011 • What happened to STEREO-B on 1 October 2014, during what should have been a routine test • How helioseismic holography images the far side using sound instead of light — and where it fails • Why a magnetic region you cannot see reshapes the field on the side facing you • What ESA's Vigil mission will do from the L5 Lagrange point New films on the cosmos, made to learn from — or fall asleep to.
