Just east of downtown Houston, crews are demolishing and rebuilding a bridge over I-69 while traffic keeps moving underneath. It's one small piece of a plan to tear apart the freeway loop around downtown and put it back together in a completely different shape — with lanes sunk below street level and new land built over the top.
That's number one. Before it: a $1.45 billion bridge the county had to rebuild after firing its designer, billions poured into Bush Intercontinental, a research campus turning into a neighborhood, a ship channel widened to 700 feet — and the 82-foot storm gate meant to protect it, still on paper. Plus the Houston hangar where America's first Moon lander since 1972 was designed, developed and tested.
