If The Fool isn't a god, whose power answers the prayers that reach the Gray Fog? In Lord of Mysteries only a Sequence 0 is a true god, and a prayer goes to the god whose three-line honorific name you speak. Then a history graduate in Tingen with no potion at all repeats a luck ritual and wakes up at the head of a bronze table above a sea of gray fog. He writes himself a three-line name, the shape the anime says belongs to the Seven Orthodox Gods, and it works.
