Trial was from Oct 27 - Nov 4, 2026 Robert Kessler, 74, is charged with first-degree murder and abuse of a dead human body in connection with the November 2021 death of Stephanie Crone-Overholts, a 47-year-old mother of three from Erie, Pennsylvania. Crone-Overholts had relocated to Florida and was reportedly living in her vehicle when she met Kessler at a McDonald's restaurant. Kessler invited her to stay at his home in Lutz, Florida. On November 11, 2021, a fisherman discovered human remains in McKay Bay near Tampa. Additional remains were recovered over the following days, including a leg bearing a distinctive tattoo with three hearts and the names of Crone-Overholts' children. After police released an image of the tattoo, her family helped identify her. Investigators connected Kessler to Crone-Overholts through witness statements, surveillance footage, and forensic evidence. Authorities reported finding blood evidence linked to Crone-Overholts in Kessler's residence and vehicles. Surveillance footage also allegedly showed a man resembling Kessler disposing of a white bag in McKay Bay, while eye-witnesses noted a black bag. Kessler was arrested on November 24, 2021, and initially charged with second-degree murder and abuse of a dead human body. A grand jury subsequently indicted him on first-degree murder. His trial began with jury selection on October 26, 2026, in Hillsborough County, Florida. During pretrial proceedings, Kessler elected to represent himself, but subsequently changed his mind and requested that his attorney be reappointed. Presiding Judge: Nick Nazaretian — Hillsborough County Circuit Court, 13th Judicial Circuit. Prosecution: Assistant State Attorney Scott Harmon Defense: Assistant Public Defender Maria Dunker — representing Robert Kessler following his decision to withdraw from self-representation. Charges First-Degree Murder Abuse of a Dead Human Body Potential sentence: Mandatory life imprisonment if convicted of first-degree murder. Notable Trial Developments On October 26, Kessler elected to represent himself and offered to plead guilty in exchange for a Philly cheesesteak, fries, and a Pepsi. Judge Nazaretian rejected the proposed arrangement. The following day, Kessler reversed his decision, requested legal representation, and indicated that he did not want to attend court. His public defender resumed representing him. The case also experienced substantial delays after Kessler was previously found incompetent to stand trial. He was subsequently restored to competency, allowing proceedings to move forward. #RobertKessler #StephanieCroneOverholts #FLtrials #TrialTVlive #TTVL #trueCrime Trial TV Live is dedicated to bringing you real courtroom coverage. 📺 Live Trials.
