41. Back to Class Reflection Series: Taking Authentic Learning into the Classroom

In episode 41 of Teaching Writing in College, I'm sharing the lesson plan I used to introduce my students to inductive reasoning last spring. As I share the lesson plan, I reflect a little more on why I chose inductive reasoning, where I got the idea in the first place, and how I think it benefits students. I also reflect a little bit on the idea of "authentic assessment," which I've been hearing at my university and which I think I've been seeing online a little at other universities. Of course, given the proliferation of AI tools for everyone, educators everywhere are thinking about whether the work they are evaluating authentically represents students' knowledge, and whether they can assign a grade that does the same. My lesson plan, as I see it, is about "authentic learning," in which students still have good opportunities to engage with content, even if they produce something written by AI.
