Military Literacy for Higher Education — Module 1, Part 2: The CAF as an Institution

Module 1, Part 2 of Military Literacy for Higher Education turns from the military profession and culture to the institution in which those experiences develop: the Canadian Armed Forces. As relationships between post-secondary institutions and Canada’s defence community grow, military literacy includes understanding enough about Defence to recognize who an institution is engaging with, how military service is structured, how authority and accountability operate, and why military careers and obligations may look very different from civilian employment. This presentation introduces the relationship between the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces; the national footprint and operational role of the CAF; Regular and Reserve Force service; Canadian Rangers and other Reserve components; command and the chain of command; rank; commissioned officers and non-commissioned members; command-team relationships; and military forms of address. The objective is not to memorize an organizational chart or identify every rank badge. It is to develop an interpretive framework. Understanding these structures helps explain why a serving student may have limited control over an absence, why “Reservist” does not describe one predictable level of commitment, why military partners may communicate through unfamiliar authority structures, and why rank provides useful context without defining a person’s education, capability or experience. Pause & Reflect questions throughout the presentation allow the material to be used individually or as part of facilitated professional learning. This presentation builds directly on Module 1, Part 1 and provides the institutional foundation for Module 2, where the focus shifts to military-connected learners and their pathways through post-secondary education.
