The answer is not that animals feel no pain. In the wild, visibly showing weakness can attract predators, separate an animal from its group, or reduce its chances of survival. Many animals may express pain through hiding, reduced movement, appetite loss, abnormal posture, lowered heads, or changes in their ears and tails—not through the loud cries humans expect. Humans express pain differently because we have language, complex social support systems, and the ability to imagine future consequences. A scream can be more than a reaction to pain; it can also be a signal that attracts help. Silence does not mean an absence of pain. And crying out does not mean weakness. If your pet suddenly hides, refuses to jump, loses its appetite, or develops an unusual posture, do not assume it is simply being difficult or “tough.” These may be subtle signs of pain or illness.
