In 1679, a 17-year-old French princess was married to Charles II of Spain, the frail Habsburg king whom Spaniards called El Hechizado, the Bewitched. Marie Louise d'Orléans never saw France again. She was blamed for her childless marriage, mocked in satirical poems, and died at 26 after a day on horseback, as rumors of poison spread across Europe. Her own mother had died at the same age, and her death was blamed on poison too. In this video, we follow the record: the letters of the French embassy, the medical reports published by the Spanish court, satirical verse, and the work of modern historians. We test three questions. Was she poisoned? Was her husband really bewitched? And why was she blamed for something that was not her fault?
