Galaxy S23 Ultra to S27 Ultra - How Much Has It Really Changed?
Five generations of Samsung's flagship Ultra line, from the Galaxy S23 Ultra all the way to the upcoming S27 Ultra. If you're holding onto an older Ultra and wondering whether it's finally time to upgrade, or you just want to see how far Samsung's top phone has actually come, this comparison lays out every real difference across five years of the Ultra line.
The S23 Ultra, S24 Ultra, S25 Ultra and S26 Ultra are all officially released phones, and everything we say about them is based on confirmed specifications. The S27 Ultra has not launched yet and is expected in early 2027, so anything covered about it in this video is based on current leaks and rumors, not confirmed information. We'll always be clear about what's confirmed and what's still speculation.
What we compare across the S23 Ultra to S26 Ultra:
Performance: The chipset jump from Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the S23 Ultra, through 8 Gen 3, up to Snapdragon 8 Elite and now Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in the S26 Ultra. We break down what this means for real daily performance, gaming, and how long these phones stay smooth over years of use.
Display: Peak brightness has climbed significantly, from around 1700 nits on the S23 Ultra up to 3000 nits on the S26 Ultra, along with a slightly larger screen size and improved panel technology. We look at how noticeable this actually is in daily use and under direct sunlight.
Build and design: Samsung moved from an aluminum frame on the S23 Ultra to titanium starting with the S24 Ultra, along with major weight and thickness reductions. The S26 Ultra is the lightest and thinnest Ultra yet, and we cover how that affects the in hand feel compared to older models.
Camera system: This is one of the most interesting shifts in the lineup. Samsung changed its telephoto approach between generations, moving away from the higher zoom, lower resolution setup on the S23 Ultra toward higher resolution sensors with shorter optical zoom on later models. The ultrawide camera also saw a major resolution jump on the S26 Ultra. We break down whether these changes actually mean better photos or just different tradeoffs.
Charging speed: Wired charging speed increased from 45W on the S23 Ultra to 60W on the S26 Ultra, even though battery capacity has stayed roughly the same across the lineup. We look at what that means for real world charging times.
Software support: Samsung guarantees several years of software updates on these flagships, which matters a lot if you're deciding whether an older Ultra is still worth using or upgrading from today.
What's rumored for the Galaxy S27 Ultra:
Early leaks point to a possible major camera system overhaul, a new processor built on a smaller and more efficient chip process, and a new security feature Samsung is reportedly testing. Some rumors also mention potential changes to the charging and battery setup. None of this is confirmed yet, and leaks so far have been inconsistent with each other, so we're treating this section as early speculation only, not settled fact. We'll cover the S27 Ultra properly with real numbers once Samsung actually announces it.
