The Bayou Plantation House History Tried to Erase (1844)
In 1844, a mysterious man arrived at the southern edge of Louisiana's bayou country with 14 wagons and a letter of credit from a bank that no longer exists. Within 18 months, Austin Monontlair built the largest private residence the Louisiana Bayou had ever seen. A house with 47 rooms. A basement that extended three levels beneath the waterline in a region where basements were considered physically impossible. Hallways that led to walls. Staircases that descended into darkness. And a chapel whose altar faced the wrong direction.
Over the next 11 years, more than 200 people vanished from the surrounding parishes.
