Three gigawatts of data center electricity demand disappeared from the grid instantaneously.
This is not a simulation: 100 million homes and 238 million people were (briefly) impacted.
At 7:56:09 a.m. EDT on July 22, a transmission event in Northern Virginia caused approximately 3 GW of data-center load to transfer rapidly to backup power.
Ting Labs real-time, data showed the resulting grid disturbance propagating across the entire Eastern Interconnection grid. The Ting sensor network saw frequency and voltage disturbances in every community across nearly half of the country.
Good news: the grid responded, successfully damped the disturbance, and recovered without a cascading failure and widespread blackouts. Dominion Energy, PJM and utilities across the interconnection deserve real credit for managing an extraordinarily large and rapid change in load.
Grid loads and complexity are increasing rapidly, so grid monitoring and intelligence need to keep up. This event demonstrates why Ting Labs partnerships with utilities, governments, and data centers are critical to providing much needed visibility.
