Bangladesh packs more than two and a half times as many people onto each square kilometre of land as India (World Bank, 2024), yet it wasn't a faster boom: in each country's census figures, the gap was already there in 1951 and had barely moved by 2011. India's average also counts its mountains, its desert and its plateau. Most of Bangladesh is delta the rivers laid down, the kind of land where India's own crowds live.
