Material as Meaning - Part Two

In the second part of the documentary, we get a glimpse into Teo’s groundbreaking technique of creating his trademark art medium. Aptly named paperdyesculp, the process involves sculpting dyed paper pulp, sometimes combined with other material, into textured and spontaneous forms that fuse painting with sculpture. Teo recounts his artistic journey from figurative to abstraction and eventually abandoning western oil painting and turning to paper, a material he felt was an everyday utility and deeply foundational in Asian culture, to create a brand-new visual language. Teo deeply believes that art should be accessible to all and that you do not need expensive material to create. He frequently repurposes cheap or discarded items like plastic waste, fabrics and everyday objects into his artworks. “Painting is playful. It’s random. It’s to enjoy yourself. Don’t agonise, because when you agonise you get nowhere. So just start by doing things, there’s no right or wrong way. You are playing with your work. And it can be quite enjoyable.
