In 1964, Ford was losing the drag strip war. Their full-size Galaxies were too heavy, Chrysler's 426 Hemi was arriving, and General Motors had the lightweight Z-11 Impala. So Ford did something nobody expected -- they took one of the most forgettable mid-size sedans in their lineup, a plain two-door Fairlane, stripped it to the bone, and stuffed a 427 cubic inch race engine into it. The result was a car that weighed just three pounds above the NHRA minimum, officially made 425 horsepower but realistically produced well over 500, and went on to win the 1964 NHRA Super Stock Championship in its very first season of competition.
This is the full story of the 1964 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt -- from the Tasca Ford prototype that started it all, to the engineers at Dearborn Steel Tubing who built 100 of the most purpose-built factory drag cars ever produced, to Gas Ronda's championship run that cemented the Thunderbolt's place in American automotive history.
Only about 60 of these cars are known to survive today, making them some of the rarest and most collectible Fords ever produced. If you are a fan of factory drag racing, American muscle car history, or Ford performance, this is a story you need to hear.
