MINDELO — Sodade After Dark is Volume III of THE LINEAGE HOUSE, a global music atlas told through original, fully instrumental electronic music. This session is built on Cape Verde's own musical lineage: the cavaquinho (the chordal-rhythmic heart of morna and coladeira), the ferrinho (the scraped steel percussion of funaná), and the txabeta (the root layer of batuku). These aren't samples or presets — they're the same instruments and rhythmic traditions that shaped Cape Verdean music for over a century, carried into a modern Afro House groove. ⚠️ A note on history: two sections of this session — Raiz · Batuku and Funaná · Libertação — are named after musical traditions that were actively banned under Portuguese colonial rule. Batuku was suppressed as a "primitive" practice; funaná was outlawed as morally subversive and only fully re-emerged as a symbol of freedom after Cape Verde's 1975 independence. Their presence here isn't aesthetic exoticism — it's documented history, and we wanted to name it rather than let it pass as texture. No vocals except one word — "sodade" (a untranslatable Cape Verdean longing, close to but distinct from Portuguese "saudade") — appearing once, unforced, in the opening and closing tracks.
