WHAT BROWN NOISE (RED NOISE, BROWNIAN NOISE) IS
Put this on and the room changes shape. Brown noise is almost all bass: heavy rain on a roof, a waterfall two fields away, the inside of an aircraft at cruise. No hiss in it at all, which is why people who bounce off white noise land here.
The name is nothing to do with the colour. It is Robert Brown, and Brownian motion, the random stagger of a particle in a fluid. Track that particle's position over time and its spectrum is exactly this. Red noise is the same thing under another name, so if a video says red, this is what you are getting.
WHY IT SOUNDS LIKE THAT
The density falls at 6 dB per octave, twice as steeply as pink, which is why the top of the spectrum is effectively gone by the time you get to anything you would call treble. In symbols, S(f) goes as 1 over f squared, so beta is 2.
There is a neat way to make it. Add up a long sequence of unrelated random steps and keep a running total: that is a random walk, and integrating in time is division by f in frequency, so white noise becomes 1/f in amplitude and 1/f squared in power.
The catch is that a random walk never settles. Its variance grows without limit and a naive generator drifts into the rails within minutes, so every real one leaks the accumulator or high passes the output. This one is high passed at 18 Hz and low passed at 14 kHz, where there was almost nothing left anyway.
Slope: -6 dB per octave. Spectral exponent beta = 2, with power density going as f to the minus beta.
WHAT PEOPLE USE IT FOR
It is the one people reach for at night. Low frequency energy covers traffic, machinery, footsteps overhead and the bottom end of a voice through a wall, which between them account for most of what wakes people up, and it does that without the sharpness that makes white noise tiring.
It has a large following for concentration too, particularly among people with ADHD, though that is reported experience rather than clinical evidence. Also used for tinnitus masking.
SETTINGS AND SAFETY
Keep it quiet. It should sit under whatever you are masking: if
you raise your voice above it, it is too loud. Overnight, move the speaker further away rather than turning it up, and
take particular care with a child in the room, since a sound machine near a
cot can run much louder than anyone intends.
This is a sound file and not a treatment. Plenty of people find steady noise
helps them sleep, concentrate or live with tinnitus, and the research behind
those uses is thin and mixed rather than settled. Tinnitus, hearing loss or
persistent trouble sleeping are worth raising with a doctor.
WHAT YOU ARE WATCHING
Slow continents of ember light, folding into each other and pulling apart. The largest shapes in the series, contoured like a map of somewhere warm.
None of this is footage. Every frame is computed from the same
kind of maths as the sound: a field with a shaped power spectrum, so the
picture matches what you hear.
The movement is a flow, not a slide: the coordinates it is drawn from are
pulled around by a second slow field, so shapes stretch and fold instead of
travelling. Detail appears only where there is already density, so thin parts
stay smooth and dense parts grow filaments, falling to true black between.
The thin line across the middle traces a signal with this colour's own
spectral slope: brown draws a few fat slow swells, violet a fine fast fuzz.
It does not read the audio: the picture loops and the sound does not.
HDR: only the trace goes above SDR white, peaking near 800 nits, so on an
OLED it reads as bright marks on black. If it looks washed out, you are
watching the SDR conversion. YouTube chooses per device, so if your screen
does HDR, check the quality menu. It never flashes, and no logo burns in.
FORMAT
3840x2160 (4K UHD), 8 hours, HDR10 (BT.2020, PQ), 10 bit, 30 fps.
Audio: 48 kHz stereo from two independent sources, so the channels are uncorrelated. Mastered quietly, about -23 LUFS.
The picture is a 30 minute generative loop with no visible seam. The audio never loops: it runs end to end for all 8 hours.
