Marvin Gaye – What's Going On | Two Musicians Discover a Soul Masterpiece

Today we're listening to Marvin Gaye's “What's Going On,” one of the most influential and socially conscious songs in the history of soul music. Released in 1971, “What's Going On” emerged during a period marked by the Vietnam War, racial injustice, political unrest, and profound social change. Rather than responding with anger alone, Marvin Gaye created something remarkable: a musical appeal for empathy, understanding, and humanity. As two classical musicians, we're especially interested in the song's rich harmonic language, layered vocal arrangements, orchestral textures, rhythmic sophistication, and extraordinary sense of flow. The combination of strings, percussion, bass, saxophone, and Gaye's expressive, multitracked vocals creates a sound that feels both intimate and expansive. What makes this recording especially fascinating is the contrast between its musical beauty and the difficult questions it raises. The arrangement is warm and inviting, while the lyrics confront some of society's most painful realities. More than five decades later, “What's Going On” continues to resonate—not only because of its message, but because of the extraordinary artistry with which that message is delivered.
