The Mwache Multipurpose Dam is a massive, Ksh 20 billion flagship water infrastructure project designed to permanently solve the acute water shortage in Kenya's coastal region. Located on the Mwache River in Fulugani village, Kwale County (roughly 22 km west of Mombasa), this 84-meter-tall Roller-Compacted Concrete (RCC) gravity dam is a core pillar of Kenya's Vision 2030 strategy. As of mid-2026, the project has reached 83% completion, with water impoundment (reservoir filling) scheduled to begin during the upcoming short rains. I visited the massive Mwache Dam construction site in Kwale County to show you how this mega project is being built. From the main dam to schools, hospitals, housing, and other facilities, this project is set to transform water supply and livelihoods in Mombasa, Kwale, and beyond.
