For most of human history, nobody slept the way you sleep tonight. Ancient humans slept in two shifts, and the gap between them was not a problem. It was normal life.
This video walks through what that actually looked like. A first sleep after dark. A quiet wakeful hour somewhere in the middle of the night for tending the fire, talking, thinking, checking on the young ones. Then a second sleep until dawn. Historians found this written all over old letters, diaries and court records, so casually that nobody bothered to explain it. Being awake at midnight was not insomnia. It was Tuesday.
There was a second layer too. A camp full of different ages meant somebody was naturally awake at every hour of the night. The teenager still buzzing at 1 AM, the parents fading by eleven, the grandmother up before the birds. Nobody assigned those shifts. The tribe simply contained them.
Then, in barely two centuries, the factory whistle, the school bell and the electric bulb crushed all of it into one rigid block of eight hours, and gave that block a moral score. So when you snap awake at 3 AM and lie there feeling defective, understand what is really happening. An ancient schedule is trying to run inside a modern rule, and you are calling the collision a personal failure.
Your sleep may not be broken. The timetable it was forced into might be.
