Alva Vanderbilt Sold Her Daughter to a Duke, Then Funded the Vote In 1926 a woman in her seventies travelled to Rome and told a tribunal of the Catholic Church that she had forced her daughter to marry a man she did not want. Not encouraged. Forced. She said her power over the girl had been absolute, and that she had used it. Nobody had compelled her to appear. She came voluntarily, at seventy-three, to put the worst thing she had ever done on the record — and she stated it more plainly than any of her critics ever had. By then Alva Vanderbilt Belmont was president of the National Woman's Party. She had paid for the first picket line that ever stood outside the White House. She had spent a fortune on the proposition that women should not be property. The obvious word for that is hypocrite. This is the argument that it is the wrong one. She was sold at twenty-two to save her family from bankruptcy. She sold her daughter at the going rate twenty years later. And she spent the last quarter of her life making sure the market was closed. She was not being inconsistent. She was the only one being accurate.
