🔥 A burn scar is the easiest walking you will ever find in the backcountry. Flat ground, open sight lines, no deadfall. And in forty years with the National Park Service, I never once let a new ranger sleep in one. 🌲 In this one I give you the six reasons why. Five of them are on paper somewhere — fire-killed trees that come down in groups on calm nights, hollow ground you cannot see, rain that falls miles away and arrives as something that is no longer water, the feeding ground you just pitched a tent in the middle of, and open country with nothing between you and the sky. 🌑 The sixth reason I never put in a briefing. Every ranger I know who has spent a night in an old burn says the same thing about the sound in there. I still do not have an answer for it. That one is at the end. ⚠️ I also take apart the rule people repeat constantly — that a burned area is the safest place to be in fire country. There is real truth in it, and it is not where people think. 👉 Subscribe if you want the rest of what this country taught me. These rules were paid for by somebody. #NationalParks #SurvivalTips #ParkRanger
