Winchester Mountain Trail | Hiking to a Historic Fire Lookout in the North Cascades

Winchester Mountain is a 3.4-mile round trip with about 1,300 ft of elevation gain. It’s a moderate hike that ends at one of the most scenic fire lookouts in Washington. This is the first episode of the Washington series, filmed in October with fall color all over the slopes. The trail starts at Twin Lakes and climbs about a mile of exposed switchbacks with Mount Baker (10,781 ft) behind you the whole way. At the top is a historic 1930s fire lookout maintained by volunteers from the Mount Baker Club. You can stay overnight on a first-come, first-served basis. There’s a cot, books, and info on the surrounding peaks and mountain goats. From the summit you get 360° views of the North Cascades, including Mount Shuksan and the red slopes of Mount Larrabee right in front of you. Without one, you’ll start from the lower trailhead and add several miles of road walking. 📵 No cell service. Download your trail map and the directions to your cabin or Airbnb before you head up. ☀️ The switchbacks are fully exposed, so dress in layers and bring sun protection, even in fall. 🏕️ The lookout is first come, first served. If you plan to stay the night, bring a tent in case it’s taken. 🌄 In October it gets dark around 6:20–6:30pm, so plan your descent with time to spare. 🐐 Wildlife includes pikas, marmots, mountain birds, mountain goats, and the occasional black bear. Early morning and dusk are your best chances. If you spot a mountain goat, report it as a citizen scientist!
