Trackside diaries and the rhythmic click-clack of the rails. Today, I am on board the Somnath Express, embarking on a picturesque train journey from the serene hills of Amb Andura down to the bustling junction of Ambala Cantt. There is something magical about train travel in India—the shifting landscapes, the sudden bursts of local life at every station, and the sheer joy of watching the world fly past your window.
Our journey begins at Amb Andura, tucked away in the peaceful folds of Himachal Pradesh. As the Somnath Express pulls out of the station, the fresh mountain air gives way to the lower Shivalik foothills. Our first major halt is Una Himachal, a bustling gateway town where passengers stream in, bringing with them the vibrant energy of the region. Moving further south, the tracks run parallel to the mighty Satluj River as we approach the engineering marvel that is Nangal Dam. Looking out the window, the massive reservoir and the gushing waters create a breathtaking view, marking our official entry into the fertile plains of Punjab.
As the train builds momentum, we cruise through Rupnagar (Ropar), an ancient land steeped in Indus Valley history, where the canal waters shimmer under the sun. The fields grow wider and greener as we pass through Morinda, a busy junction town pulsating with local trade. But the absolute highlight of the trip happens just on the outskirts of Chandigarh. The tracks hum with anticipation before a thrilling cross-over event—the Somnath Express effortlessly crossing paths with the iconic, high-speed Paschim Express. The roar of the twin engines and the blur of the passing rakes is a pure adrenaline rush for any rail enthusiast.
Skirting past the modern, well-planned layout of Chandigarh, the train enters its final stretch. The landscape changes from open fields to urban tracks as we slow down, hear the changing click of the points, and finally enter the historic platform of Ambala Cantt Station. From the quiet hills of Himachal to the massive rail hub of Haryana, this journey on the Somnath Express has been an unforgettable mosaic of speed, steel, and scenic beauty.
