Rocky Mountain trappers, frontier survival skills, cave shelter
January, high in the Rocky Mountains.
A trapper had less than four hours of daylight left when he spotted a dark opening in the mountain ahead.
His moccasins were damp. Snow had worked beneath his buckskin trousers, and every time he stopped moving, the feeling in his feet faded a little more.
The cave looked like an answer.
He led his horse beneath the rock, dropped his gear against the wall and started working before the light disappeared.
He cleared a place to sleep, gathered wood and built the largest fire he could manage.
For a while, it seemed to work.
Then darkness settled over the valley.
Smoke began hanging beneath the stone ceiling. Water crept across one side of the floor, while his pile of dry wood disappeared much faster than expected.
By midnight, he was still awake.
And still cold.
Everything he had done had seemed reasonable.
Yet an experienced Mountain Man entering the same valley might reject that cave within minutes, continue farther along the ridge and disappear into another opening in the rock.
Four hours later, he could be dry, settled and ready for the night.
Same weather. Same basic equipment. Same mountain.
So what did the experienced trapper see that the beginner missed?
