Mountain Lions Keep Being Spotted Across New England — And No One Can Explain Why
Mountain lions were officially declared extinct across the eastern United States in 2011, and struck from the Endangered Species List in 2018. Trail cameras, game wardens, and DNA labs keep documenting them across New England anyway.
This documentary examines three decades of confirmed and disputed cougar sightings from Maine to Connecticut — from the catamount tracks verified at Massachusetts' Quabbin Reservoir in March 2011, to the Cape Elizabeth cougar confirmed by lab analysis in 1996, to the young male struck and killed on the Wilbur Cross Parkway in Milford that same summer, genetically matched to a wild animal that walked more than 2,700 km from the Black Hills of South Dakota. It follows the reports that never stop: the forty to fifty filed in Vermont every year, the 11,000-member sighting network in New Hampshire, the hoaxes the wardens quietly debunk, and the 2025 confirmation of cougar cubs hundreds of miles to the west — the breeding edge of a recovering species moving steadily back toward the Northeast.
What the evidence shows. What state biologists will actually confirm. And why a self-sustaining population may still be decades away — despite a documented dispersal corridor that already runs through the Adirondacks and into the New England woods.
A cold investigation into an animal that officially does not exist in New England, and the cats that keep walking past porch cameras anyway.
