9 Deep Ocean Mysteries Science Still Can't Explain, Ranked by Evidence

In 2024, scientists reported oxygen being made on the pitch-black seafloor with no sunlight at all. Then the rebuttals arrived, and in April 2026 the journal added an Editor's Note. Nine real deep-ocean anomalies, ranked on one explicit axis: how far the evidence still is from settling each one. We start with cases where the cause is known but details remain open, like the 1942 'false bottom' that turned out to be a living layer of animals, then climb through milky seas, the Lost City hydrothermal field, the 52-hertz whale and the mysterious Upsweep sound. At the top sits 'dark oxygen', the 2024 claim that metal nodules on the abyssal seafloor produce oxygen.
