My process for creating hi-tech percussion. A continuation of the previous 185BPM kick and bass video :) Some pointers: Generally I try to not put any closed hi-hat on the off-beat (or I will make the CHH very low in volume), mostly because if you find the right samples, the open hi-hat will flow together with the closed hats perfectly. Hence, adding an additional CHH on the OHH beat is just waste of headroom. I throw a clipper on everything, and clip it as much as possible until I start hearing changes in the sound. Sometimes you can gain several dB of headroom while not affecting the sound in any audible way. I play around with channel delay on CHH, OHH, and snare. This is so that the transients are not playing on top of each other. Sometimes just moving a transient 1 or 2ms forward or backwards can make it pop out a lot more, while increasing headroom. Use some nice room reverb with short decay to give the drums some life. To make them more snappy and not get drowned in the reverb, put a compressor on the reverb send channel and sidechain the compressor to the drum group, and tweak the attack and release settings until you get the desired effect. For selecting samples, I generally throw a bunch of samples in a drum rack. Then I go threw them a bit, and for every sample I like, I will make a disabled note and drag it out of the loop to the left (like you see in the video), and once I have like 5-8 good samples, you can just press the "Fold" button, to only show those samples that you selected. Then you can choose your main samples from this smaller selection, and have the rest for variation in some different drum parts. In case of any questions, let me know!
