Sterling 10.25 Brake Job

Learning the differences of OBS Ford axles to do a simple drum brake job on 1988 F350. Below is a write up about the axles found on fords to help identify what axle you have and what parts you'll need for your brake job. F250 light duty (under 8600 lbs gross weight rating) these sport a semi floating rear axle. 2.5" wide shoe.none of these trucks housed the big blocks or diesels. F250HD (the most common f250 of the era) sports the same full floating axle the srw f350 uses. 3" rear brake shoe. F350 SRW 3" rear brake shoe. F350 DRW 3.5" rear shoe. rear drum on a DRW is supposed to be a 12 1/8" drum where as the SRW has a 12" drum 1980/91 F250 could have 12" x 2 1/2" or 12" x 3" rear brakes. 12" x 3" also used on F350's except 1987/97's with DRW that came with 12 1/8" x 3 1/2" rear brakes. 1992/96 F250's could have 12" x 3" or 12" x 3 1/2" rear brakes. 1997 F250 Heavy Duty had 12" x 3 1/2" rear brakes. 1997/98 F250 Light Duty came with 7 lug wheels, used the same "sloping nosed cab" as 1997/03 F150. Ford 8.8 inch 10 bolt rear cover with 8.8" ring gear. Rear applications have c/clip axles in both 28 and 31 spline. Front applications are in late model IFS Ford's and will have 28 spline axles using CV joints. Used in Models: Bronco: 1987 - 1996 (Rear) Ranger: 1990 - 2005 (Rear) E150: 1983 - 2006 (Rear) E250: 1983 - 1998 (Rear) F150: 1959 - 1987 (Rear) F150: 1983 - 2006 (Rear) F150: 1997 - 2006 (Front) F250: 1997 - 1999 (Front) Ford 9 inch Drop out style rear with 9" ring gear. Available in both 28 and 31 spline. Has removable pinion support. Used in Models: Ranchero: 1957 - 1979 (Rear) Bronco: 1966 - 1986 (Rear) E150: 1961 - 1987 (Rear) F100: 1957 - 1979 (Rear) Ford 9.75 inch 12 bolt rear cover with 9.75" ring gear. Has 34 spline c/clip axles. Used in Models: F150: 1997 - 2006 (Rear) Ford 10.25 inch 12 bolt rear cover with 10.25" ring gear. most applications were full floating however some applications do have c/clip axles. Differentials older than 1993 will require a new yoke to be compatible with a new ring and pinion. Used in Models: E250: 1985 - 1998 (Rear) F150: 2000 - 2006 (Rear) F250: 1985 - 1998 (Rear) F350: 1985 - 1998 (Rear) Ford 10.5 inch 12 bolt rear cover with 10.5" ring gear. Has full floating axles. Used in Models: F250: 1999 - 2009 (Rear) F350: 1999 - 2009 (Rear) Dana Spicer D44 10 bolt cover with 8.5" ring gear. Found in both front and rear applications. Rear applications use a bolt in axle. Axles are 30 spline. Front applications came in both standard and reverse rotation. Used in Models: Bronco: 1971 - 1977 (Front) F100: 1948 - 1979 (Rear) F150: 1967 - 1996 (Front) F250: 1959 - 1989 (Front) F350: 1979 - 1979 (Front) Dana Spicer D50 Ford front end, found in both straight axle and independent front suspensions. Often confused with a Dana Spicer 60. Please check your bill of material numbers for proper identification. Used in Models: F250: 1980 - 2004 (Front) F350: 1980 - 1986 (Front) Dana Spicer D60 10 bolt cover with 9.75" ring gear. Found in both standard and reverse rotation. Axle spline counts range from 16 to 35. Used in Models: E250: 1969 - 2002 (Rear) E350: 1988 - 2001 (Rear) F100: 1965 - 1971 (Rear) F250: 1954 - 2002 (Rear) F250: 1978 - 1979 (Front) F250: 2002 - 2006 (Front) F350: 1979 - 2003 (Front) Dana Spicer D61 10 bolt cover with 9.75 ring gear. Looks like a standard Dana 60, but has a different offset for the carrier and therefore will require modifications in order to run certain ratios. Used in Models: E250: 1974 - 1984 (Rear) Dana Spicer D70 10 bolt cover with 10.5" ring gear. Has full floating axles with 30 or 35 spline. Used in Models: F350: 1961 - 1983 (Rear) Dana Spicer D70-HD 10 bolt rear cover with 10.5" ring gear. Has full floating axles with 35 splines. HD has larger pinion and carrier bearings than a standard Dana 70. Used in Models: F350: 1980 - 1997 (Rear) Dana Spicer D70-U 10 bolt rear cover with 10.5" ring gear. Has full floating axles with 32 splines. Has smaller pinion bearings than a standard Dana 70. Used in Models: E250: 1983 - 1997 (Rear) F250: 1983 - 1997 (Rear) F350: 1980 - 2002 (Rear) Dana Spicer D80 10 bolt rear cover with 11.25" ring gear. Could have 35 or 37 spline axles. Later model fords use different pinion bearings than all other models. Used in Models: F350: 1988 - 2009 (Rear) 10 bolt rear cover with 10.5" ring gear. Has full floating axles with 35 splines. HD has larger pinion and carrier bearings than a standard Dana 70. Used in Models: F350: 1980 - 1997 (Rear) Dana Spicer D70-U 10 bolt rear cover with 10.5" ring gear. Has full floating axles with 32 splines. Has smaller pinion bearings than a standard Dana 70.
