The central contradiction at the heart of fandom is this: fandom is free, it has to be free. But the object of that fandom? That is big, big business.

I want to deinfluence you from spending all of your hard-earned money and time on companies that don't care about you if you're not getting anything from return! Fans put hours of free labor into creating content and fanwork surrounding the media that they're obsessed with, all the while making little to no money off that time. But at the same time, the companies that own franchises like Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and Harry Potter make millions of dollars off their products. In this video, I talk about discourse around participating in fandom and urge you to consider how you spend money in fandom related ways. This video is relevant to anyone that is interested in the aforementioned media as well as anime, various k-pop groups like Stray Kids, Seventeen, and BTS, or even big video games like Genshin Impact. Just because you can spend thousands of dollars on fandom doesn't mean you have to or you should, so I want to deinfluence you from spending your hard-earned money on something that doesn't make you happy!
