September 27th 2026. Spelman Spring AKA Cypress Knees Spring. This cave is south of Marianna on the Chipola River. We put the scubacanoe in the water at the Peacock Bridge Boat ramp (where Peacock Bridge Road crosses the Chipola River). We motored north. The spring run is on the West side of the Chipola (left side as you are generally headed north). The spring is about 200 yards up a spring run. The river level was very low the day we went and the spring run was only 2-3 inches deep in places, so we had to carry our gear up the run which did have some sandy spots but mostly consisted of sharp jagged limestone.
The line generally runs straight until in Ts downward in a large room with beautiful clay banks. The shallow section ends a short distance from the T. In the deep section there was an initial T that dead ended if you took a right but if you went left, you found another T. Both the left and the right at this point got fairly small and silty in both directions so we turned the dive. May depth I saw was 114 ft with the river at a low level. Plan accordingly.
2 person dive team. KISS Sidewinder CCR rebreathers for both divers. We each had a pair of LP50s for bailout gas.
As usual, all videos and shorts are unedited. Videos are named for the dive location followed by a number indicating the ordered they were filmed in. I try to associate all videos and shorts with a playlist. Playlists are organized by dive locations.
The state of Florida maintains more than 1 spring index which looks a bit like google maps and you can zoom in and out. If you can find where Peacock Bridge Rd crosses the Chipola and zoom in you will find the spring on the west bank north of the bridge. Safe diving!
