Welcome back to Redmont. Episode 19 takes us to a small pocket of land just north of the highway that I've been putting off for a while. The terrain is a bit hilly and the game really doesn't love building on rolling land, but the changes in elevation turned out to be pretty manageable once I got into it.
This little community has its own history that predates Redmont itself. It would have started as its own separate town back in the late 1800s, eventually getting cut off from Redmont when the highway and railway came through in the 1930s. That left it a little isolated, which is actually what sets up the whole Walmart situation.
Cheap land along a highway and a railroad meant big box stores moved in eventually, and of course the granddaddy of all big box stores shows up. But rather than going with the tired old 1990s narrative about Walmart destroying a small town, I decided to take a more optimistic look at what that might actually mean for a community in 2026, where Redmont has been booming for decades and people are looking for more affordable alternatives just outside the city.
Along the way we work through the historic main street, pick out some great late 1800s buildings, add schools, a church, a graveyard, and give the whole area some landmark features that set it apart from the rest of the build.
