Context:
The Corsair Le Grand Coureur,
or Le Grand Coureur, is a traditional French sea shanty. This shanty, with 12 verses, evokes the harsh conditions of life at sea and the privateering during the time of the Napoleonic Wars.
The lyrics originally only included the first 11 verses.
They were first published in the journal La France maritime in 1840
or 1842, according to different sources, although it is highly probable that the song is older.
Commander Hayet collected and published the melody in 1927,
adding the final verse.
The song evokes the adventures at sea of a French corsair ship from Lorient called Le Grand Coureur, during the time of the Napoleonic Wars. The song recounts the harsh conditions at sea, the battle against an English ship which escapes them, and then the meager captures of three merchant ships. The paltry loot leads the crew to their demise.
