Around 100 BC, a scribe in Jerusalem is copying the book of Isaiah when he reaches four Hebrew letters: Yod, He, Vav, He. He stops, washes his whole body, puts on fresh clothes, takes a new pen and writes the name in silence. Nobody had said it out loud for centuries. The Bible does not give God one name. It gives him dozens, and each one was spoken first by a real person at the worst moment of their life: Elohim, the God of the first verse El Roi, named by a runaway slave girl at a desert spring El Elyon and El Shaddai, given to Abraham Yahweh Yireh, on a mountain where a knife was raised I AM WHO I AM, from a burning bush Yahweh Rapha, Nissi and Shalom, named at a bitter well, a battle and a winepress Yahweh Sabaoth and Yahweh Roi, from David Yahweh Tsidkenu and Yahweh Shammah, from the prophets in exile Then a carpenter from Galilee stands in the temple courts and says, "Before Abraham was born, I am." And in a garden at night, the name no one would say becomes a word a toddler could say: Abba. ⏱️ TIMELINE 00:00 The scribe and the four letters 00:26 He washes before writing the name 01:02 Josephus will not write it 01:11 The wrong vowels, on purpose 01:31 The afternoon a carpenter said the name 01:46 Dozens of names, each learned in a crisis 02:35 Elohim: the first name in the Bible 02:48 A plural name with a singular verb 03:22 Yahweh Elohim: God on his knees in the dirt 03:57 Hagar alone in the desert 04:23 He says her name 05:22 El Roi: the God who sees me 05:38 If you have ever felt invisible 05:46 Melchizedek and El Elyon, God Most High 06:38 El Shaddai: the God who is enough 07:22 Mount Moriah: "Where is the lamb?" 07:51 Yahweh Yireh: the Lord will provide 08:13 Two thousand years later, no ram 08:29 Subscribe 08:39 Moses and the burning bush 09:04 "What is his name?" 09:16 I AM WHO I AM 09:32 The name is a sentence, not a label 09:48 Every Egyptian god had a job; Yahweh simply is 10:21 LORD in capital letters, Adonai and HaShem 10:37 Why "Jehovah" is a mistake 11:00 Exodus 34: God defines his own name 11:47 If you thought the Old Testament God was all thunder 11:58 Yahweh Rapha: the bitter water at Marah 12:23 Yahweh Nissi: the Lord is my banner 12:44 Gideon in the winepress 13:05 Yahweh Shalom: the Lord is peace 13:20 Every name was given in a crisis 13:38 The hard season is where you learn a new name 14:01 David and Goliath: Yahweh Sabaoth 14:36 Yahweh Roi: the Lord is my shepherd 14:55 One God with more names than you have problems 15:11 Jeremiah: Yahweh Tsidkenu 15:27 Ezekiel: Yahweh Shammah, the Lord is there 15:47 For someone who feels God is silent 15:59 The temple courts: "Before Abraham was, I am" 16:34 Ego eimi: the words from the burning bush 16:49 He put the four letters on himself 16:56 The seven "I am" sayings 17:18 The arrest: soldiers knocked flat by a name 17:47 Thomas: "My Lord and my God" 18:13 Gethsemane: the name becomes a child's word 18:45 Abba 19:12 Paul: "We cry Abba, Father" 19:30 3 a.m. in a hospital hallway 19:55 Three things to carry with you 20:47 The unspeakable name became speakable 21:13 Which name of God did you need most this year? 21:27 Tonight, use the name the Son used 📖 SCRIPTURES IN THIS VIDEO Genesis 1:1; 2:4–7; 14:18–22; 16:1–13; 17:1; 21:1–2; 22:1–14 · Exodus 3:1–15; 15:22–26; 17:8–15; 34:5–7 · Judges 6:11–24 · 1 Samuel 17:45 · Psalm 23:1 · Jeremiah 23:6 · Ezekiel 48:35 · Hebrews 7:1–3 · John 8:48–59; 6:35; 8:12; 10:11; 11:25; 14:6; 18:4–6; 20:28 · Mark 14:36 · Romans 8:15 💬 Which name of God did you need most this year: El Roi, the God who sees; Yahweh Shalom, the God of peace; Yahweh Shammah, the God who is there; or Abba?
