I Found Huawei’s $63K Defender Rival — Stelato G9 First Look

Is the new Stelato G9 really China’s answer to the Land Rover Defender? I went hands-on with the new Huawei-backed Stelato G9 in China to find out what this huge luxury SUV actually offers — and whether its combination of technology, luxury, performance and price makes it a serious alternative to established premium off-road SUVs. The Stelato G9 is developed by BAIC and Huawei under the Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA). Prices in China start from RMB 429,800, approximately US$63,000 at launch. Depending on specification, the G9 is available as a fully electric BEV or EREV range-extender SUV, with dual-motor four-wheel drive producing up to 437 kW / 586 hp. The EREV version offers a claimed combined CLTC range of more than 1,366 km, while the BEV can offer up to 728 km CLTC. But the numbers aren't the most interesting part. Chinese luxury SUVs are evolving incredibly quickly, and the Stelato G9 shows just how differently brands such as Stelato, Huawei and BAIC are approaching the premium SUV market.
