Four little animals sit in a row on a rock twenty feet down: a hermit crab, a king crab, a porcelain crab and a red rock crab. They look like the same animal, but only one of them is a true crab. This film asks why evolution keeps building the same body. The process is called carcinization. It has happened at least five separate times, always inside the decapods, and always starting from animals that looked like small lobsters. We go step by step through what the crab shape is: a wide, flat, hard shell, a tail folded tight underneath, and legs that stick out to the sides. Then we look at why it keeps winning. A flat body fits under stones, a tucked tail removes the weak spot, a sideways walk means never turning around, and a rounded shell resists pressure. The story ends with the cost. A body tuned for one kind of world depends on that world holding still, and the hermit crab on a shallow shore shows what every crab walked away from.
