Agra Fort is one of India’s most important Mughal-era monuments and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
🏰 History of Agra Fort
Before the Mughals: The site was originally known as Badalgarh, and a fort existed here before the Mughal period.
Akbar’s reign (1565–1573): Emperor Akbar ordered the construction of the present massive red sandstone fort around 1565. Thousands of workers and craftsmen were involved.
Jahangir: Akbar’s son continued to use the fort as an important royal residence and administrative centre.
Shah Jahan: The fort reached its greatest architectural splendour under Shah Jahan, who added beautiful marble palaces, halls and mosques. He also built the Taj Mahal across the Yamuna.
Aurangzeb: During Aurangzeb’s reign, the fort remained an important Mughal power centre. Shah Jahan spent the final years of his life confined here, traditionally said to have been able to see the Taj Mahal from the fort.
Later history: After the decline of Mughal power, Agra Fort came under the control of the Marathas, and later the British.
1857: The fort played a strategic role during the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
UNESCO: Agra Fort was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
⭐ Famous places inside the fort
Jahangiri Mahal • Diwan-i-Am • Diwan-i-Khas • Musamman Burj • Khas Mahal • Moti Masjid • Anguri Bagh
The fort is particularly interesting because its architecture shows the transition from Akbar’s red-sandstone style to Shah Jahan’s elegant white-marble architecture.
